Question #427

The Political Gauge is a political test that measures where you stand on the political spectrum. Unlike many tests that simply measure whether you are liberal or conservative, the Gauge places you on a two-dimensional grid consisting of fiscal and non-fiscal issues by taking a look at your views and the depth of your beliefs.

For each of the twenty categories below, please select the statement that best matches your personal views. Do not spend much time analyzing - pick the statement that your intuition most connects with. After that, select how strongly you feel about the issue.

1. Fiscal Priorities
As a general policy, the government should look to reduce taxes and cut programs.
Reducing the federal budget deficit and paying off the national debt should be the top financial priority of our government.
Deficit spending is an effective strategy for spurring the economy, and the accumulation of additional debt is countered by faster overall economic growth.
As a general policy, our government has a responsibility to provide more social services, financed with higher taxes if necessary.

2. Gun Policy
The government should encourage more responsible gun ownership and usage without the use of regulations.
We have the right to bear arms and the government should not interfere with this.

Guns are a danger to society and we should work to ban them across the board.

3. The Role of Government
Government-provided social services are important, but current levels are far too high.
Providing social services ranging from school lunches to Medicare is a primary function of government.

The government should be actively involved in supporting social services, but should do so primarily through grants to and support of private organizations.

4. Business & Farm Subsidies
Current subsidies to farms are simply pork barrel politics and should be eliminated.
Subsidies to struggling businesses and farms are necessary to help protect U.S. jobs and help the American farmer remain more competitive in a global market.
Subsidies are a useful tool for the government to provide incentives to shape corporate behavior.
Government subsidies to businesses and farms have no place in a free market economy. The market should set prices and weed out inefficient businesses.

5. Foreign Aid
Our role as the sole remaining superpower demands that our commitment to foreign aid for all purposes be expanded greatly and expanded to more nations.
Foreign Aid should be primarily to support the democratization of countries or to strengthen our relationships with other nations.
We have a responsibility to provide humanitarian aid to other nations without expectation of anything in return.
The United States has too many domestic issues that must be dealt with. Aid to foreign countries should be reduced or eliminated.

6. Privacy Issues
I do not believe the Patriot Act infringes on my rights and thus it not a major concern for me.
We should re-evaluate some portions of the Patriot Act to ensure the American people are given reasonable protections from government.
In times like we're in, we must compromise some freedoms to counter terrorism. The Patriot Act is in our best interests.
The Patriot Act is an overextension of government and an invasion of our privacy. The government should not have this much power to track its citizens.

7. Drug Policy
Marijuana and other low-level drugs should be legalized or decriminalized.
Drugs should remain illegal, but sentencing needs to be changed such that instead of putting users in jail, they are fined or put in rehabilitation programs.
We should maintain or toughen current drug laws.
The government should legalize most drugs and allow individuals to make their own choices.

8. Social Security
A small hike in Social Security taxes combined with slightly lower benefits is needed to make sure future generations have a strong system in place when they retire.
Social Security must be made more efficient through privatization, allowing individual Americans to manage their own savings.
The federal government should not be involved in major wealth redistribution. Social Security and other similar entitlements should be significantly scaled back or eliminated.
Social Security should be protected at all costs. Reduction in future benefits is not a reasonable option.

9. Tax Policy
The income tax should be reformed into a single flat tax rate such that all Americans share the burden equally.
A larger share of the tax burden should be paid by the wealthy, and taxes on the poor and lower-middle classes should be reduced.
The progressive income tax code in place is preferable to a flat tax rate and places the burden with those who can most easily afford it.
It is unfair to tax higher income individuals more for being financially successful. The income tax should be replaced by a national sales tax.

11. Gay Rights
Gay & lesbian couples deserve the right to marry and receive the same legal benefits as heterosexual couples.
We need a Constitutional Amendment to protect the institution of marriage and define it as an act between a man and woman.
Civil unions should be an option for the gay community, but the term marriage should be reserved for heterosexual couples.
Individual States should have the choice of whether to recognize gay & lesbian couples.

The public school system in the U.S. is failing and the federal government must support school vouchers to give children the opportunity to attend private schools.
The federal government has a responsibility to fund education, but should allow the decision making to occur at the local levels.
Public education is primarily a local issue and should be left to state and local governments.

Big media conglomerates have far too much control of the nation's airwaves and are too cozy with government.

14. Business Regulations
Regulations are a healthy strategy for long-term growth while protecting all members of society.
Regulation is necessary to protect both our safety and the environment from corporations only concerned with net profit.
A free market will naturally regulate the issues most important to Americans. Government should work to de-regulate industries as much as possible.
The excessive environmental regulations placed on business are counterproductive and only hurt the economy.
